Mechanics of Pickering Drops Probed by Electric Field–Induced Stress
Fluid drops coated with particles, so-called Pickering drops, play an important role in emulsion and capsule applications. In this context, knowledge of mechanical properties and stability of Pickering drops are essential. Here we prepare Pickering drops via electric field-driven self-assembly. We use direct current (DC) electric fields to induce mechanical stress on these drops, as a possible ...
متن کاملPolymerization of electric field-centered double emulsion droplets to create polyacrylate shells.
Porous and hollow particles are widely used in pharmaceuticals, as solid phases for chromatography, as catalyst supports, in bioanalytical assays and medical diagnostics, and in many other applications. By controlling size, shape, and chemistry, it is possible to tune the physical and chemical properties of the particles. In some applications of millimeter-scale hollow shells, such as in high e...
متن کاملShear Deformation of the Spherical Shell Acted on by an External Alternating Electric Field: Possible Applications to Cell Deformation Experiments
Shape deformation of the thin, area non-compressible spherical shell separating two differ ent media, subjected to an external, alternating, homogeneous electric field is considered. The function relating shape deformation of the shell to the shear stress in its plane is presented. Shear stress develops as a result of Maxwell stress acting on both shell surfaces. All media are considered as lo...
متن کاملElectric-field-induced deformation dynamics of a single nematic disclination.
Disclinations in nematic liquid crystals usually adopt a straight shape in order to minimize their elastic energy. Once created in the course of a nonequilibrium process such as a temperature quench from the isotropic to the nematic phase, the topologically stable disclinations of half-integer strength either annihilate each other in pairs of opposite strength or form topologically unstable dis...
